Protest in Tamil Nadu Against Construction of Vallalar International Centre

Residents in Parvathipuram village protested against the construction of the Vallalar International Centre in Vadalur, Tamil Nadu. They are unhappy with the government’s decision to build it in an area known as peruveli, which is used by followers of the Smarasa Sanmarga Sanga movement. They want the Centre to be relocated to another place.

On April 8, 2024, tension arose in Vadalur, Cuddalore district, as some residents of Parvathipuram entered the construction pits dug for the ₹100 crore-Vallalar International Centre near the Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar Deiva Nilayam.

The residents oppose the government’s choice of location for the Centre and insist it should be moved elsewhere. They expressed their discontent by entering the construction pits while infrastructure work was ongoing. The police arrested 161 protestors, including 91 women.

A resident named Chakkara Ramakrishnan explained that the land where the Centre is planned to be built was originally donated for a different purpose, and the surrounding area, known as peruveli, has been historically significant for followers of Vallalar’s teachings.

According to him, the construction of the Centre would not only reduce the value of the existing Sathya Gnana Sabhai but also restrict the usage of peruveli by followers. He urged the government to consider the concerns of the people and find an alternative location for the Centre.
