In his opening remarks, the CJI acknowledged the multifaceted considerations associated with incorporating AI into modern judicial processes, emphasizing the need for thorough examination. He delineated AI’s role as a double-edged sword, capable of amplifying inequality by privileging those with access to advanced technology, while simultaneously disrupting existing hierarchies and fostering inclusivity by democratizing access to legal services.

Chief Justice Chandrachud cited the adoption of hybrid-mode hearings as a prime example of justice delivery transcending geographical limitations. By enabling lawyers from any corner of the country to represent their clients before the highest court without the constraints of expensive and time-consuming travel, this approach has significantly broadened access to the Supreme Court of India, fostering a more equitable legal landscape.

Moreover, the CJI lauded the implementation of AI-powered live transcription services, facilitating real-time translation of judicial proceedings into 18 regional languages and Hindi. This initiative aims to ensure that legal information is accessible to all segments of society, thereby enhancing transparency and inclusivity within the legal framework.

Highlighting AI’s potential to expedite and streamline justice delivery, Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the imperative of embracing evolution within the legal profession. He underscored the need to move beyond the era of maintaining the status quo, advocating for a proactive approach towards leveraging technological advancements to enhance the efficacy and accessibility of the judicial system.

In conclusion, Chief Justice Chandrachud’s remarks underscore the importance of critically engaging with the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in the realm of judicial adjudication. By fostering dialogue and innovation, the judiciary can harness the transformative potential of AI to uphold the principles of justice and equity in an increasingly digital age.
